Backyard Buildings and Insource Renewables Announce Release of New Solar Shed

March 14, 2017

Over the past decade, a small group of Amish folks has become a well-established part of Unity, Maine. The families in the community have brought significant commerce, including a community store (with popular homemade donuts on Wednesdays), a metal roofing shop, a charcuterie, a bicycle shop, and a small manufacturing facility.

One manufacturing company, Backyard Buildings, specializes in the construction of storage sheds and tiny houses. These high-quality structures are built in Unity and transported to customers across Maine. Each building has a variety of options, including several sizes, door styles, windows, and types of siding.

Beginning in March 2017, customers can now choose an integrated solar electric system for their building. Backyard Buildings is collaborating with Insource Renewables to offer the Solar Shed, a high performing and versatile option for individuals seeking to integrate renewable energy into their home or business.

Customers can choose from a grid-tied solar photovoltaic (PV) system or a standalone PV system for off-grid applications.

The Solar Shed is built to suit at the Backyard Buildings facility in Unity. Insource Renewables also installs the solar portion of the product at the Unity, 15 miles from the company’s Pittsfield headquarters. The solar portion of the system includes racking, high-performing REC Twin Peak solar modules, and conduit and wiring from the roof. For grid-tied applications, an SMA inverter and disconnect are installed. For off-grid applications, an Outback FlexMax 80 solar charge controller in installed with a disconnect. Batteries and a battery-based inverter can also be added to the package.

Once the Solar Shed is delivered to customer’s site, Insource Renewables can be hired to complete the installation, or the owner can work with a local electrician to establish electrical service to the shed.

This partnership allows us to provide a ground-mounted solar solution that is comparable in cost to a roof-mounted system and provides the additional value of an outbuilding!

Delivery rates vary by size and location. The standard delivery fee for a project within 100 miles of Unity ranges from $325-$750. Systems are eligible for a 30% federal tax credit. Check with your tax preparer for details.
