Solar Tax Exemption - We're Still Working On It!
During the 2019 legislative session, we worked with several stakeholders to support a statewide equipment tax exemption for solar energy systems that provide bill credits to Maine homes and businesses. The bill passed, and we provided input to Maine Revenue Services related to the implementation of the exemption. More information on the importance of this legislation can be found in a blog post we published last year.
We are Here to Help Complete Your Tax Exemption Form
Earlier this month, Maine Revenue Services released the form required to claim the tax exemption.
The form contains some confusing and incorrect guidance for completing the technical portion of the form. As a result, we have decided to complete the technical information for our hundreds of clients across Maine. We are busy preparing fillable pdf files that include all of the technical information that is appropriate for us to complete. Our customers are left to complete contact and site information and the net cost of the system following any incentives, including the federal tax credit.
How and When to Submit Your Tax Exemption Form
These forms need to be submitted to your local tax assessor by April 1st to claim the exemption. This form only needs to be submitted once and will provide your municipality with tax revenues from the state, since the state must reimburse 50% of the "lost tax revenue" to the municipality whenever its passes a tax exemption.
If you do not submit this form and your municipality decides to assess property tax on your solar investment, you will be responsible for those taxes. You can submit the form next year if you fail to file it this year. The easiest thing to do is to simply complete and submit this form this year.
